Marathon Study - participants wanted for survey
Prof. George Wu of the Univ. of Chicago is investigating how people make decisions, and wants to ask
you, "What on earth made you decide to run a marathon?", and later, "So, how'd it go?". You might win
an iPod Nano or Garmin Forerunner GPS watch...
(posted March 7, 2008)
Letter to Participants
The University of Chicago, Graduate School of Business is conducting a study on the relationship
between marathon performance and satisfaction and we would like to invite you to participate. We
are seeking individuals who plan to run in any of the following 2008 marathons: Boston, Grandmas,
Los Angeles, or Rock 'N' Roll.
The study involves completing 3 online surveys, one taking place roughly 2 months prior to the
marathon and the final taking place after the marathon. Each survey should take no longer than
10 minutes to complete and will include a variety of questions pertaining to the marathon, your
training, and your general running experience. Participants will be entered into a lottery offering
prizes including an iPod Nano, Garmin Forerunner GPS watch, and a Nike running jacket. The study
has been approved by the University of Chicago's Institutional Review Board (IRB).
More information about the study (including a full listing of prizes), contact information, and an
online registration form can be found here .
We also hope that this research will be of interest to you, and we would be delighted to provide
you with the results of our research when the study is complete.
We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
George Wu, PhD

Nipmuck note from Joe Schutz
(posted June 7, 2007)
This year in the Nipmuck Trail marathon I took a bad
fall early in the race. I tore my patella tendon. I'm
having knee surgery in a few days.
I just wanted to express my graditute to all the
runners and volunteers who were there to help.
Every runner who passed by on the turnaround asked if
I needed anything. A runner offered me advil, a
volunteer came back with a blanket so I wouldn't be
cold in the rain. The race director and another
volunteer became human crutches to get me out of the
woods on difficult trails. (Luckily it was only a 1/4
mile to the nearest road). A volunteer EMT helped
immobilize my leg.
I've been a runner for 30 years and I've always found
a tight bond among runners.
Last weekend I felt proud to be part of this
community.
Thanks to all
Joe Schutz
Grand Tree schedule for 2007
(posted December 11, 2006, from Rob Higley)
The Grand Tree has grown from 17 races in 2004 to 24 races in 2006. Continued expansion could
change the GT from a series to a mere race listing. So, to give Ken Clark and his fellow stoneheads a
fighting chance to run all possible races in the series, and to give the rest of us at least
fleeting aspirations of running most of the series and then doing really really well at
Stone Cat, I've put some races that could be on the Grand Tree on a separate list of
"Additional Worthy Races". This page also has some classics, like Escarpment, and gems, like
Soapstone Assault, that don't fit the Grand Tree format because of limited entry, handicapped start, etc.,
as well as Bogie's MorFun Wapack and the Pineland Farms races. Suggest others if you feel strongly that they belong.
Please run these races when you can, too - no GT points involved, but you will accumulate forest karma.
The Greylock Marathon looks as if it will not be run in 2007, but it may rejoin us, if not in 2007, then in a later year.
